Albarino wines come from white grapes originally found in the northwest area of Spain and the northwest area of Portugal. The origin of the grapes appears to be from Riesling grapes. The name of the grapes comes from a phrase that translates to “the white from the Rhine.” The grape produces a very distinct aroma with hints of peach and apricot. The wine has become a player on the international scene in the past couple of decades. Many vineyards in Northern California produce these grapes as well as wine makers in Australia.

Many Albarino wines come from the Rias Baixas DO of Spain. This area covers wine growing areas in Pontevedra and A Coruna in Spain. This area produced well-known white wines made from the Albarino grapes. This wine also has other names that people know it by including Albarina, Alvarinha, Azal Blanco, and Galego. This wine started out as a regional wine but gained a reputation around the world.
