The Petit Verdot grape is a red varietal that has had a rocky history in its path to the modern world. The origins of this grape seem to come from the Bordeaux region of South West France. It is distinct from other grapes from this region as it ripens much later in the season than other regional varietals. Due to this late ripening, it was often too late to add it to blend of wines. Over time, many wine growers in Bordeaux found they could not use these grapes and it fell out of favour.

The loss of favour did not alter the rich flavours that the Petit Verdot grape has. In its early aromas, many recognize the scent of bananas. As it ages, hints of leather and violet develop. The grape loves the warmer regions of the world. It has gained popularity in places like California, Australia, and Argentina. The warmer regions allow the grape to mature consistently which help the yields as well as the maturity of flavours.

Many of the areas growing Petit Verdot grapes are experimenting with wines made totally with these grapes. It is a popular addition to Bordeaux blends as it provides a strong flavour that helps to mature these blends. The grapes add colour, tannin, and flavour that other grapes in the blend do not have.
