Rhone wines
Along with Burgundy and Bordeaux, one of France’s most famous wine producing regions. Whilst there are numerous varieties planted it is the Syrah and Grenache grapes that are most prevalent and praise-worthy. Rich, spicy reds are the norm here that are wonderful with food or on their own.
The Rhone wine region is divided into north and south. In Northern Rhone Syrah is used exclusivly in all red rhone wines. Viognier, Marsanne and Rousanne are used in Northern white Rhone wines. The North is is divided into several appellations; Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Château-Grillet, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray.
Southern Rhone or Châteauneuf-du-Pape is divided into Coteaux du Tricastin, Côtes du Ventoux, Côtes du Vivarais, Lirac, Tavel, Vacqueyrasmore, Gigondas, Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise and Rasteau.
Red Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are made from blends of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, and Cinsaut. White Châteauneuf-du-Pape are blaned from Ugni Blanc, Picpoul, Roussanne and Clairette.
