Tempranillo

Spain is the third largest producer of wines by volume, the bulk of which is comprised of tempranillo. Unlike most other wines, tempranillo wines are made wholly from tempranillo grapes. The more famous tempranillo wines are from Rioja and Ribera del Duero.

Producing wines is a matter of tempering a grape’s character, balancing acidity, tannin, sweetness and alcohol as well. Vintners do this by blending different wines from different years to create a consistent taste for the wine year after year. Tempranillo wines on the other hand are usually single vine varieties without any blending with other grape varietals. These wines can be both, and there are tempranillo wines that can be enjoyed early, while some more expensive wines of this type are aged for several years.

With a distinctive ruby red color, tempranillo wines are produced all over the world. They have been cultivated not only in Spain, but also in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Canada, and in the United States as well. The grape is grown in California where it is known as Valdepenas. There are also vineyards growing the grape in New Mexico and Texas.
