Tuscan wines carry an age-old tradition in winemaking with them. Almost as far back as the Greek colonization of Italy in 800 B.C., there have been vineyards and wineries in the Tuscany region. Historian Zeffiro Ciuffoletti wrote, “Tuscany, as regards wines, has no equal the world over.” Millions of wine aficionados since have agreed with his observation.

Wines, vineyards, and wine growing in general have been an integral part of life in Tuscany for nearly three thousand years. From when the first Etruscans settled in the region to present day, winemaking has been a way of life, and Tuscan wines are a source of immense pride with the populace.

In the late 1960’s, both Vernaccia and the Chianti were the first wines to be granted a Designation of Origin. This gave the wines produced in Tuscany a special air of distinction among coinsures of the international market and led to their unrivaled reputation for quality.

While hailed as the producer of some of the most important traditional reds in the world, the region has recently struck another milestone in wine production. With the introduction of international grape varieties, and the 70’s use of French barriques, the beginning of the 80’s saw the introduction of what became known as Super Tuscans. These wines have an international flavor that imparts a very good reputation for winemaking to the area.
