Wine Tips

Did you know that, in general, white and pale flowers are particularly strongly scented? Think oriental lilies, tuberose, tazetta and narcissi. Freesia are an exception to this - darker red and pink varieties have the strongest scent.

WINE

Grand Vin de Glenelly, Glenelly Estate

Chateau Pichon-Lalande comes to the Cape! The various grapes were aged separately for six months in French oak (1/3 new), then blended and aged a further six months in the same barrels. Showing beautifully at the moment; dark Syrah fruit on the nose, a hint of black pepper, then more Cabernet on the palate – sleek, savoury blackcurrant; hints of coffee and earth – with a great balance of ripe tannins and balanced acidity.

Producer: This estate is in Idas Valley on the southern slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, and origins date back to the 17th century. May-Eliane de Lenquesaing had been a regular visitor to the area on family holidays, and after 30 years as the formidable chatelaine at Pichon-Lalande wanted to maximise the potential for top-quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in these parts. Since her purchase in 2003, a stellar new, five level, gravity-flow winery has been built to make the most of the 60 hectares of east-facing slopes planted to the Cabernets, Shiraz, Merlot and Petit Verdot plus some Chardonnay. These vineyards benefit from the cooler mornings, and breezes from Cape Point temper the afternoon sun provide even ripening conditions. Costantia-born winemaker Luke O’Cuinneagain gives an emphasis on natural winemaking, aiming for natural fermentation and zero acidification, and as vines mature wants a wine that will age with the very best.
