A beautiful collection from one of the greatest Rioja houses of all:
2009 Rioja Blanco
A blend of 90% Viura and 10% Malvasia. Dry and clean with peach and citrus notes and hints of oak. For anyone with bad memories of oaky, over-oxidised white Rioja I prescribe at least a glass of the excellent Muga Blanco. A delightful combination of ripe citrus (lemon, lime) and herbal notes (thyme, tarragon), with a gentle vanilla finish. Fabulous seafood wine.
2009 Rosado
A blend of Garnacha, Viura and Tempranillo, the new release has a beautiful strawberry colour this year, followed by a wonderfully ripe, inviting nose of ripe apricot and peach, then a fresh, fruit-filled palate of fresh raspberry and strawberry fruit, with an elegant mineral note. Delicious (as always!); great with or without food.
2005 Rioja Tinto Reserva
(70% Tempranillo plus Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano) The Muga Reserva always has a delicacy and fragrance that many of the newer, full-throttle riojas can lack, combined with irresistible, pure red fruit to please all palates. Wonderful with lamb, grilled red meat, great with hard cheese and charcuterie.

Producer: Bodegas Muga has been a favourite Rioja house of ours for many years. They are lovely people who make great wines across the board, neither overly entrenched in tradition nor so smitten with modernism that the very things that make Rioja such a unique wine are lost in the search for a more international style. In recent years the family has invested heavily in the cellar and in particular in new, smaller fermentation vats so that individual parcels of vines can be separated out – this assists greatly when ing the final blend. Vineyard management is also second to none and anyone visiting their vineyards in La Rioja Alta can see at once how healthy and well tended the vines are. The common thread between all their wines is freshness and purity. All have the ability to make one want another glass.
