New Zealand wines can be traced back to their colonial times when, as early as 1836, James Busby attempted to produce wine on his land. By 1851, New Zealand’s oldest existing vineyard had been established by the Roman Catholic Church in Hawk’s Bay. Interestingly enough certain economic, political, and temperance factors held back the development of the industry for a little over a century.

Montana winery in Marlborough soon began producing New Zealand wines during the early 1970’s that were labeled by both vintage and grape variety. By 1977, they had produced a Sauvignon Blanc of great note. Superior quality wines of Muller Thurgau, Riesling, and Pinotage soon followed this famous New Zealand wine.
